Walking in the Fells above Haweswater
Thursday was a beautiful day and we had the chance to get out to the bottom of Haweswater for a hike in the sun.

Head of Haweswater, Mardale Head, in the past was usually a quite place and parking was not a problem but now despite the car park being made slightly bigger it is a popular place to start your walk so the order of the day is get there early and expect to find cars parked in unexpected places along the road.

Very quickly on the walk up to small water there are views to be had.

So the hardest part of this walk is up to small water then following the path round the right hand side, climb ‘Nan Bield Pass’ a hard short climb that made me glad I had spent time in the gym this winter strength training my legs. (Actually really pleased I didn’t find this hard at all). there are views from the Pennines to the sea at Morecambe, Windermere is a bit close so there is a glimpse beyond Kentmere reservoir. So then we climb up towards the Cairn at Mardale Ill Bell and onto High street.
That feeling of being on top of the world with views across the Lake District and its big glamorous hills. Glimpses of our favourite walk: Hayes Water to Angle Tarn. Although we are walking above Blea Water you don’t ever get to see it. Our route now takes us right above Two Penny Crag

We head in brilliant sunshine but windy ( so making sure to re do suncream) towards Kidsty Pike. and a rather faster than I would prefer, descent down Kidsty How

An amazing cloudless day just managed this walk in between welcoming our guests later that evening.

Penrith Beacon Wood
Above Penrith sits the historic Beacon Pike surrounded by a beautiful and tranquil woodland which is home to a varied wildlife, flora and fauna which has been enjoyed by countless generations.
Last year you might be aware that it was threatened by a building development and people (including myself) got together to form a community group called ‘Friends of Penrith Beacon’ to campaign for its protection.
Meetings were arranged a committee sought, a petition of some 700 signatures, gathered a website and Facebook group gained a large following. It culminated at the end of the Summer with a fabulous rally starting from different sides of the town and finishing by St Andrews Church with speeches, music and song. This attracted the attention of local and national press.
The week after, Lowther who own the land withdrew from the larger plan that was proposing a development behind the Beacon. We now have a different council but our aims are still the same to protect this special place.
I have added some articles and links below that you might find interesting.
